Creation Care – What It Means to Me

I’ve always felt a strong connection to God through anything living. Be it a plant, animal, or a friend, I see the beauty, the love and the likeness of God in these things. To me, creation is all that God has created: space, sky, and anything living here on Earth. I see it as our responsibility as humans, made in God’s own image, to take care of these creatures and living beings that may need some TLC to continue to live/grow.  I feel the need to protect innocent beings and help maintain the wonderful things God has given us to live with.

What is the difference between creation care and going green? I see creation care as going beyond just reuse and recycle products, but as stewardship and worship to God. By picking up trash, volunteering at a community garden, or just simply spending time in nature, we are embracing God’s work, and worshiping His name. As Christ followers, taking care of the living organisms and helping to maintain a healthy environment is helping to bring forth the light of His kingdom here on earth. I think we have all experienced a little bit of that light through maybe a jaw-dropping sunset or a fall hike through the woods, or maybe during a vacation to the Grand Canyon, whale-watching in BC, or lounging on the beach in the Bahamas. The God I love and know delights in our love and attention to Him and His work. I think when we take the time and focus to delight in what He has created we are creating space to invite Him into our lives even more, as He embraces us back, revealing Himself in new ways. And yet, we wonder why we feel so “refreshed” after a long afternoon hike or a walk on the beach. Is God not always pounding at our hearts and longing to draw nearer to us? His creation, these living creatures and beautiful skies are here for us. His gift, His affection, and His Kingdom is here taking delight in us, loving us, warming our hearts with that soft green grass on bare feet, cool ocean breeze, and loving wet kiss from a pet.

For me, taking care of the plants in my house, playing with my cat, and paying close attention to the little creatures (insects, leaves, dirt) I see my creator, my lover, my savior, my God.  I feel closer to Him when I feel the warmth of a sun ray shining on me as I’m driving down the highway and I know He is present, drawing nearer, making Himself known.

“Ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” (Job 12:7-10)
