The Age Old Question: What is my response to the panhandler?

In a recent sermon on hospitality, I emphasized the need to press our hospitality outwards from caring for one another in the household of faith (Galatians 6:10) to extending the table to the poor, lonely and forgotten (Luke 14:10). The sermon led to a couple of engaging conversations about the Christian response to panhandlers who are appearing more and more on the medians at our suburban intersections. I understand the quandary of not knowing how

Bound

Throughout Lent I’ve been doing Lectio Divina weekly with a group here in Burlington. If you’re not familiar with this form of scripture reading, what happens is that a passage is selected and read slowly two or three times. The invitation is to allow a word or phrase from the reading to sink into your heart and mind, asking the Spirit what this word or phrase is about. (Yes, a little different, I know…) The

Seeking Through Doubt

I was baptized when I was 19. Between then and now a lot has happened. I actually think I sinned more since I have been baptized then before I was baptized. Thank goodness we have a forgiving God. I went from a life of lies and secrets, to this place of openness and healing. With Gods help I am slowly being stitched back together in the way God has intended for me. God has been

Unexpected Grace

Summer of 2015, the holy spirit impressed on my husband's heart that God wanted to use my body but I wasn't ready. He was not specific on how. October 13, 2015, I dreamt an old friend had come to visit me. In the dream she told me I would get pregnant. I was totally opposed because I have two beautiful preteens that God has blessed us with. Anyway, in this dream, I had to walk

Personal Need

Heavenly Father, We come to you with hearts full of thankfulness. Thank you that you love us no matter what; nothing can separate us from your abundant love. We

Emerging Generations

Father, Each morning, I wait for my classroom of bustling students to arrive. As they enter the hallway, I listen. And so their stories are told. In their words and by their actions, I am reminded daily of the battles your children face. One where they struggle to accept their differences as beauty. One where their own communities refuse to accept their unique quirks and gifts as valuable. I hear it in the way they

The Candle of Hope

A LAMENT FROM THE PEOPLE... So here we are, God. Our calendars tell us it's Advent and that we're to be celebrating. But frankly, God - and forgive our complaining - or perhaps it's truth-telling - but one quick look around the globe and the conflict and killing and the cruel way we treat each other - and it just reminds us how busted we are. We read the newspapers in the morning and the headlines

This is my Story: A Reflection on Psalm 30

A creative re-imagining of Psalm 30 by Jordan Campbell   I will praise you LORD, for you have saved me, you have not let the evil one rejoice over me! I called out to you in my youth, and you resurrected me! For I was walking in darkness and you opened my eyes to the light.   Take this time to praise the LORD, and worship his holy name! Let us sing together and remember
